Abraham Lincoln is viewed as a permanent shaper of this country. For some, it is a negative feature. For others, it is a representation of en-lasting democracy. Thus, there are many monuments of Abraham Lincoln throughout the country to signify his importance to the United States.

B. The Memory Group(s) behind your monument:
The memory groups of this monument is the State of North Dakota, the community of Hillsboro, and to a certain extent, the country of Norway as well as the city of Geneseo, Illinois, where there is a "twin" of this monument.

3. Upstream - The person or thing to be commemorated by your monument:
The Lincoln Monument in Hillsboro was created to serve as a North Dakotan recognition of the independence of Norway and their democratic form of government.

4. Establishment of the Monument:
The Lincoln Monument in Hillsboro was created as a replica to the original that was made by the State of North Dakota and give to the country of Norway. The monument was given to commemorate the 100 years of independence of Norway. The State of North Dakota felt that Abraham Lincoln was a great symbol of democracy, and thus an ideal symbol for the democracy of Norway. The funding for the monument was obtained by donations from schoolchildren of North Dakota.

The Lincoln Monument in Hillsboro has a question that still needs to be answered: Why was it placed in Hillsboro, North Dakota. Also, there needs to be more information about the designing, meaning, and personal thoughts in relation to the monument.

Good, you've got a start on this. Since you've begun an introduction, you ought to be able to fill in the lead and thesis. I think, though, you have the material for your lead listed in section II. II.A. should be historiographic, dealing with interpretations of historical monuments and collective memory.

Memory groups--great!

III. This is great, too! I wasn't thinking of the monument as celebrating Norwegian independence. This means it actually celebrates two things--Lincoln and Norway. Good. Make these two points in this section.
