Matt Spielman
A senior majoring in History Education,Matt Spielman was born on July 1st, 1985 in Fargo, North Dakota. After graduating, Matt Spielman wants to stay in the state and pursue a teaching career. Weird, someone who actually wants to stay in North Dakota. He enjoys watching sports and reading up on military history, especially World War II Naval History. How he came to like Naval history growing up in the state farthest away from an ocean will never be known, but, needless to say, he has a ton of books on the subject. Matt is looking forward to this class and hopes we all have a great semester.
Prospectus for Paper
Matt Spielman's topic is the Grand Army of the Republic's monument here in Fargo. After visiting the monument and taking some pictures of it, Matt has acquired some new information on what it meant to GAR veterans. I plan to use materials contained in the University Archives as well as obtaining any information about the GAR itself from local veterans groups such as the American Legion and the VFW's here in town. The monument itself looks like one that would be in Washington D.C., with a Union Soldier standing at attention on the top of the monument, with inscriptions around its base targeted to loyalty as well as dedication to the fallen soldiers sacrifice. As far as a remembrance group, I believe it would be the soldiers and families of Union soldiers, although there are no more living Civil War veterans. I would like to find out if any families of these soldiers still go back to the monument on Veterans Day and Memorial Day and pay tribute to their fallen heroes. Since we will be in school over Veteran's Day, I will try to go to the monument on that day and see if anyone is around to give me any information.

OK Matt, I'm going to get on you once more about this first-person stuff. Check your bio and weed it out!
As for the prospectus, thanks for posting; it's good, as far as it goes. Two suggestions for a little more weight. First, be more specific about the records available--the GAR records, I mean. You know the collection number and nature of the records, so say what you know. Second, get at the idea of collective memory and how the monument expresses it. What's the memory group? |

Don't beat yourself up for wanting to stay here. ND is a great place to live...at least you don't hear gun shots after it gets dark.

All right, Matt, you're still leading the way. Now, I'm going to ask you to revise the bio, putting it into third person. There is a place in historical writing for using first person, but by and large, we're going to stay in third person in writing for the seminar. So, take the I's out of the bio, and refer to yourself as Spielman.

All right, Matt, you're the first to activate your membership and establish a home page. How about making the title of the page just your name, "Matt Spielman"? I think that would establish a good, plain precedent for others. OK, go ahead and plug your name into the other parts of the page and get your bio posted.
