HIST 489 (Fall 2007)

This page details work by Matt Boe in the Senior Seminar in History. Matt is a native of North Dakota who grew up on a farm in the North Central part of the state, close to the Canadian Border. He hopes to graduate at the end of this semester and plans to go on to pursue a degree in Power Plant Technology at Bismarck State College. After he achieves his education, he hopes to gain employment in the energy industry. Matt enjoys reading, outdoor activities, and tinkering on old farm equipment (much to the dismay of his parents, who complain about the room his equipment takes up). He hopes to have a great semester in this class, and hopes everyone else in the class has a great semester too.

Prospectus for Paper

Matt’s topic is the monument to Noble’s Golden Margaurite. The monument originally marked the grave of this Jersey cow on the NDSU campus. It was created to commemorate the achievements of Noble’s Golden Margaurite for producing a record amount of butterfat in 1921. The monument was created in 1931. Sometime after 1978, the monument was moved to its current location outside Sheppard Arena. Matt has no idea what primary sources are available. However, some newspaper articles do exist, and some architectural plans may be relevant to this monument. Based on a bit of research, Matt thinks that the monument served as proof that a viable dairy industry could be developed in North Dakota.
