Prospectus for Paper
Lincoln in Hillsboro

The Abraham Lincoln statue in Hillsboro, North Dakota is the monument that Kurt has chosen to study, interpret, analyze, and just plain attempt to understand for the fall 2007 senior seminar course at NDSU.

Although Kurt does not have any preliminary information, personal ties or opinions about this monument, he does hope to be able to try to understand why this statue is in North Dakota and what it represents and means. To do this, Kurt plans on looking at records about the statue. This includes such information as construction information (who built it, when it was build, ect.), the opinion and consensus of the statue when it was being built (was it a controversial event, who opposed and supported it, ect.), what the monument is constructed of, how it is remembered currently, and many other “viewable” characteristics of the monument that include physical characteristics, documental findings and opinions of those effected by the monument.

Currently, Kurt has a couple of different ideas as to why this monument was created. The first reason is that the people behind the monument creation wanted to build this monument as a “thank you” and remembrance of the actions that President Lincoln took as a result of the Sioux Uprising in the 1860’s. The second is that the monument is the result of people that wanted to remember the person that ended slavery in the country. However, it is very possible that he could be wrong with both of these.
