Prospectus: My topic for Senior Seminar is the Henrik Ibsen monument in Wahpeton, ND. The scope of this study will include Norwegian-Americans, the students and faculty of NDSCS, other American cultural memory groups, the Fjelde family, and, of course, Henrik Ibsen himself. In terms of time, the scope of this study will include aspects of Ibsen's life in the 19th century through present-day Wahpeton. I anticipate using newspapers (both municipal and collegiate), public records, and interviews as my primary sources. At the moment, my hypothesis is that the Ibsen bust was part of a larger celebration of Norwegian culture, and that the city of Wahpeton and NDSCS have had mixed feelings about the bust over the years.
Abstract: Coming soon -- I just got my article through interlibrary loan yesterday (10-27), after weeks of waiting!

Introduction: Attached below in Word Doc.
Thesis: For a monument fixed in copper on a heavy stone pillar, the Ibsen bust has traveled long and far to get where it stands today, and it’s meaning to the various memory groups associated with it has often changed because no one group has a whole claim to this monument.
